The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was past and future in one, for many enthusiasts it is the last traditional Rolls-Royce. In terms of its engine, however, it established a long line of ancestors. And it was at least as much a driver's car as a chauffeur-driven car. When Rolls-Royce was thinking about replacing the reliable Silver Dawn, which was still related to the pre-war vehicles, they didn't want to offend the generally conservative buyers any more than the independent coachbuilders, who were dependent on a car with a separate and stable chassis. The Silver Cloud presented in April 1955 therefore adopted the classic design, in which the body and chassis are separate. However, the new car was of course to be significantly better and so instead of the previous U-profiles, closed box girders were used for the frame, which was reinforced by a cross member. This resulted in 30% more torsional stiffness with only 5% more weight.
