Summary
From 1984 to 1995, Peugeot built the compact 205 GTI and won the hearts of many sports drivers who were looking for a lightweight yet powerful car that was convincing in everyday use and on weekend cornering. This driving report characterizes the French front-wheel drive car and shows it in historical and modern illustrations as well as in the advertising and sales literature of the time.

The basic model had already been on the market for six months as a four-door model with engines up to around 80 hp. Even then, it was clear that the three-door sports version would be called the "GTI" and that the Golf GTI would be the benchmark.
