Summary
In 1960, Opel presented a new Rekord P2, which was significantly smoother and much more European than its predecessor, the P1. The Rüsselsheim-based company had achieved a great success, selling almost 800,000 units in less than three years before it was discontinued. This driving report tells the story of the Rekord P2 and portrays a 1.7-liter model from 1962, supplemented by advertisements and archive footage from the time.

When Opel announced a new Rekord generation in August 1960, it marked a clear departure from the American design line of its predecessor. Instead of a panoramic windshield, there was a slightly curved, large windshield and a flat body instead of the round roof. The somewhat playful design of the P1 ("P" for panoramic windshield), which had been built since 1957, gave way to straight and trapezoidal lines of reason. And the new design brought many advantages, above all a better all-round view to all sides and diagonally upwards.
