Summary
Anyone who enjoyed driving a British sports car, but also wanted to use the car in everyday life and occasionally transport something, was offered a new alternative at the end of 1965, the MG B GT. The technology and most of the components were shared with the open-top MG B, but the coupé was visually brilliant and is still one of the most popular classics today. This driving report describes the history of the MG B GT and shows the coupé in current and historical pictures, as well as in the sales literature.

Those who enjoyed driving a British sports car, but also wanted to use the car in everyday life and occasionally transport something, were offered a new alternative at the end of 1965, the MG B GT. The predecessor MG A had already been available as a coupé, but with the MG B the Italian design company Pininfarina helped to develop a closed version that was not only elegant but also very practical. The new coupé was shown to the public for the first time in October 1965 at the Earls Court Motor Show in London. The Automobil Revue reported: "Another major attraction on the British Motor Corporation stand was a cutaway model of the newly launched MGB GT Coupé mounted on a turntable, which attracted large crowds of visitors to the show thanks to its very attractive lines. The fastback-style coupé, whose pavilion line was designed by Pininfarina, is characterized by a tailgate that extends into the roof. By folding down the rear bench seat, which can be removed if necessary, the luggage compartment can be significantly enlarged, and the stylish interior underlines the luxurious character of this elegant GT coupé. Its 95 SAE hp engine corresponds to that of the familiar cabriolet version; however, reinforced suspension elements and a stabilizer bar take the higher payload into account."
