First of all, praise to the Italian traffic police. Without their grandeur, the tester would have had to abandon the test drive with the azure blue sports coupé from the Alfa Romeo factory in Milan as soon as he had started it. Shortly after Como, on the road to Bergamo, two traffic patrol officers stopped the car. Perhaps only because they wanted to take a closer look at the 'Giulietta Sprint', which is hardly ever seen on Italian roads. But as they had already given the signal to stop, they probably also had to check the papers. The tester gave them everything he had: the vehicle documents, the confirmation that it was a test drive for hobby, and even the document that the tester had had to sign in the Milan factory with a heavy heart and according to which he undertook to pay for any damage to the car himself. No small matter for a sports coupé with a top speed of over 165 km/h and a purchase price in Italy of 1.9 million lire! The officials handed back paper after paper, only the German driver's license remained in their hands, shaking their heads. "Not valid," they said. "A car with an Italian number" - our sports coupé had the license plate MI-270683 - "may only be driven with an Italian or international driver's license!" Since the tester had neither, and since it was not to be hoped that the eye of the law would be less strict in Italy than elsewhere, he had no choice but to ask the very sad question: "So back to Milan?" But with a generous gesture, the two policemen handed back the driver's license and said: "Drive wherever and for as long as you want!" Smiling, they put their hands on their crash helmets in greeting. In the rear-view mirror, the tester saw them gazing after the azure coupe for a long time.
