The Jaguar XJ-SC has always been polarizing. Not really a coupé, not really a convertible. And something in between? Not really either. Even for the manufacturer, it was only an improvised stopgap solution. But in the end, this niche model of all things became the savior of the brand. The end of the XJ-S was actually already a foregone conclusion. The successor to the E-Type presented in 1975 sold so miserably that it was to be discontinued after just five years. Even in its best year, it had not even managed to sell 3900 units. At the end of 1980, only 1057 cars had been sold in the previous twelve months. Project failed, back to the drawing board. This would probably have been the case if John Leopold Egan had not become the new CEO of Jaguar on April 17, 1980. He quickly realized that the XJ-S itself was not the problem. After all, the E-Type had already made the transition from aggressive predator to twelve-cylinder automatic pussycat and could therefore not be blamed for the equally comfort-oriented successor.
