Summary
After the Mark X had become a little too expansive, Jaguar returned to the slim sports saloon with the XJ 6, without sacrificing the typical English ambience. In fact, there was so little to criticize about the blend of luxury and performance that "sport auto" saw only the uber-Mercedes with its 6.3-litre engine as an equal competitor. A Rolls evokes admiration, a Ferrari enthusiasm, a Lamborghini curiosity, a Porsche is hardly noticed, a Mercedes arouses a certain longing and a Jaguar general recognition. It represents the happy medium between a car for industrialists and playboys, sport and luxury. Despite this, its image, beautiful bodywork and fabulous craftsmanship, which reached its peak at Le Mans, is slowly being forgotten by car enthusiasts. The XK 120, 140 and the Type E embodied the ideal, beautiful and good sports car at the time. The MK 2 saloon represented the "family car" with high performance par excellence. The Type S and later the 420 did not replace the old models because, despite undisputed technical improvements, they degenerated stylistically.
