Family car and sports coupé - Jaguar 3.8 S in (historic) test
Summary
For the 1964 model year, Jaguar filled the gap between the Mark II and Mark X with the S-Type. The new centerpiece combined both the visual and technical features of both siblings to create an extremely convincing sports sedan: fast, spacious, stable and comfortable. In the test at the time, which is reproduced here in the original wording and supplemented with historical photographs, the Jaguar 3.8 S performed excellently.

If you thought the Jaguar S was an embellished Mark 2, then I would advise you to forget it. You won't find it difficult once you've driven the "S". It is a completely new car, a "sports sedan", if you will allow me to use that expression, and if there ever was such a thing. So where is this big difference to the Mark 2? First of all, the rigid axle has disappeared. For the "S" models, the independent suspension of the "E" Type and the Mark X was used. This is not only noticeable in terms of road holding, but also in terms of space. Apart from the fact that the "S" is slightly larger than the Mark 2 anyway, there is also a new, exceptionally favorable gear ratio, a new ventilation system and numerous detail improvements that make the Jaguar "S" an unusual car.
