Not so many years ago, the VW Beetle was the most-produced vehicle in automotive history, but it has since been overtaken by more modern successors. However, the popularity of the round rear-engined car remains unbroken, and even as a classic car it is high up in the registration rankings. A Beetle makes drivers, passengers and passers-by smile, and that is precisely the aim of this story illustrated with particularly emotional pictures for the 2016 Beetle Year.

Hurricane "Niklas", the dry summer of 2015 and the heavy cone cover on the conifers provided productive groundwork for the 2016 beetle year. Heat favors beetle development, so there is usually a whole generation of these six-legged creatures in addition. Just one more generation - normally two, not three - means several million more beetles. In the case of the beetles we are reporting on here, however, it is exactly the opposite, as these creepy-crawlies stopped reproducing in 2003 and their population has been declining ever since. From 1938 to 2003, every year was a Beetle year, as a total of 21.5 million units of the VW Beetle were built during this period. This made it the best-selling car in the world, ahead of the Golf.
