Final assembly Opel Rüsselsheim, May 25, 1983: Normally, the impact wrenches rattle here and brand-new cars roll off the assembly lines non-stop. But today there is solemn silence. 10:44 a.m. Two gentlemen in dark suits approach a silver-grey Senator CD standing at the end of the assembly line, decorated with flowers: CEO Ferdinand Beickler and Works Council Chairman Richard Heller. The engine starts and the car slowly rolls towards the entrance hall. Flashbulbs flare, film cameras whir, the invited guests applaud. The applause is for the 20 millionth Opel automobile that has just been completed.
