Opel's first car - the Motorwagen System Lutzmann from 1899
Summary
In 1899, the Opel company launched its first passenger car, which it was able to build thanks to patents and inventions from the Lutzmann company. 65 examples were produced by 1901, and at least two survived in Germany. This report describes the first Opel passenger car and shows some pictures of it.

The founder of the Opel company, Adam Opel, had already died in 1895, but his widow and two sons, Karl and Wilhelm, continued the work they had started. After years of success with sewing machines and all kinds of other equipment, the company had already started building bicycles in the 1980s. Around the turn of the century, the company realized that the automobile was slowly but steadily gaining ground and decided to buy the patents and inventions of the Lutzmann company. This opened up the opportunity for "mass production" for the master locksmith, automobile pioneer and designer Friedrich Lutzmann.
