Summary
Cadillac brought out a big V16 in the middle of the economic crisis of all times. However, the clientele for such a car was only marginally affected by the economic downturn - the average consumer couldn't afford a 16-cylinder anyway. Sixteen cylinders is quite a lot under a single hood. The connoisseur may list a few brands that built such cars, such as Marmon, Bucciali and Peerless - but only Cadillac managed to produce enough units in this category to avoid the suspicion that General Motors added hard dollars to every single vehicle. Large-volume V-engines were already available at Cadillac around 1914, when it was eight-cylinder engines that gave the competition from America's luxury cars a run for their money, and the leading position of the luxury brand, founded in 1903 by Henry M. Leland, has been consolidated ever since.
