But the British were certainly able to set standards with their cars in terms of comfort and performance. But how did the name Daimler actually come to England? The Daimler brand exists twice in the world. Strictly speaking, the cars with the three-pointed star are called Mercedes-Benz and their manufacturer trades as Daimler-Benz Aktiengesellschaft, while the other company, Daimler, became part of the British Leyland Group via Jaguar (as of 1975). This historical review describes how a British automobile company came to be named after a German pioneer of motoring history. In the early days of motorization in Britain, there were two men who, despite all the adversities of that era, saw a great future in the automobile business and did everything in their power to make this young, new industry flourish. Harry J. Lawson imported motor cars, bought up patents and financed many a promising project, while Frederick Simms initially built cable cars and worked in all kinds of technical fields before one day chance brought him together with Gottlieb Daimler.
