Summary
Between 1976 and 1982, Bertone built 6622 Volvo 262 Cs, around three quarters of which went to the USA. The coupé attracted attention with its special design, which combined the conventional underside with a hardtop-like flat roof structure. Despite strong criticism of its design, the Bertone coupé has matured into a veritable classic. This report looks at the history of the Volvo 262 C and portrays a late model, supplemented by archive images from almost all years of construction and production at Bertone.

However, the design did not originate from Italy, as the Bertone lettering on the flanks might suggest. Volvo's chief designer Jan Wilsgaard - who also shaped the Volvo Amazon - had swung his pencil and derived a coupé from the four-door Volvo 264.
