Summary
Over 900,000 of the Alfa Romeo Alfasud were built between 1971 and 1983. Initially producing 63 hp, the "Sud" developed up to 105 hp, making it one of the liveliest compact saloons. Rust and quality problems prevented the great career of Alfa Romeo's first front-engined model, while sports drivers appreciated the lively Italian for its handling and the inimitable hoarse engine sound.

It was earlier, more spacious, sportier and more beautiful. Nevertheless, the Alfasud didn't stand a chance against the VW Golf from Wolfsburg. Quality problems, rust and prejudices prevented it from achieving great success. Today, Alfasud models have disappeared from our roads, while the Golf has become one of the most produced cars in the world. However, the Alfasud was the first choice for the Italophile , ambitious sports drivers of the seventies with transportation needs that implied five seats and a veritable trunk. The name Alfasud contains the word "sud" for south. The new model was not only intended to tap into state subsidies aimed at promoting the southern part of Italy, but also to repurpose an existing infrastructure in Pomigliano d'Arco. In particular, however, Alfa Romeo wanted to claim a share of the expected growth in passenger cars and needed a compact and affordable saloon.
