When Alfa Romeo presented the Type 164 in 1987, its Tipo 4 siblings Lancia Thema, Fiat Croma and Saab 9000 had already been on the market for years. Nevertheless, the Alfa Romeo was probably the most interesting of the four platform cars. Alfa Romeo had already been working on a Project 154 early on in the 1980s, and a 1:1 model of a large Alfa saloon was already available in 1981. In 1982, the project was transferred to the "Tipo 4" development platform, which started in 1978 and through which the four manufacturers Lancia, Fiat, Saab and Alfa Romeo hoped to save development costs. The joint platform was geared towards a front-wheel drive saloon in the upper middle class.
