The "DKW Senior" - Auto Union 1000 S in the (historic) test
Summary
Slowly and deliberately, Auto-Union continued to develop its mid-size class. The 1960 model year saw the introduction of a fully synchronized gearbox and a fashionable panoramic windscreen for the Coupé. One change was well received, the other less so. This article reproduces a test report from "Automobil Illustrierte" from 1960 and shows the Auto-Union 1000 S in historical photos.

Fans see it as a pike in a carp pond that disrespectfully shows its backside to its competitors or even high royalty and gives them something to smell that lies between ambergris and musk. What the non-fans say or test does not need to be repeated here, because it is a real nuisance for the DKW community and a reason to smile for the rest, because "it has always been said". Pikes are only popular with sportsmen and gourmets, even pikes with minor flaws! Or wouldn't the AU 1000 S have them? I like the two-stroke, of course, but I'm not a fanatic, I like it because of its almost unlimited and yet so simple possibilities. But not as a delicacy, which is a double-camshaft engine of princely blood, but by no means such a simple string thing. Nevertheless, I like it because it needs no valves, no camshafts, no rocker arms, not even a drive for the fuel pump, no distributor and no water pump. In return, you can forgive it some sins, the smelly plume, the flushing losses, which are particularly severe if you have two left feet, the almost legendary "rough idling" and the mixing when refueling. But this is where the advantages come to the fore again: the power output from a small displacement, the temperament, the ability to climb and rev.
