The work consists of two parts, a high-quality book, in which almost only illustrations are shown, and a small 17x23 cm booklet, in which the history of the 904 is told on 47 pages.
History in detail
Its full name is the Porsche 904 Carrera GTS, and it "ushered in a new chapter", as Ferry Porsche is quoted as saying. The authors explain in detail how Porsche came to develop the 904 and show the connections with the FIA's rule changes at the time.
Origin of the design
In the chapter on the design of the 904, the reader learns what Count Goertz, the designer of the legendary BMW 507, is all about and how Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, known as Butzi, lifted himself to the design Olympus with the 904.
Short development time
The renowned experts Lewandowski and Bogner describe the circumstances in which the vehicle had to be developed and also discuss the Porsche family environment. It took just six months from the first line on the drawing board to the finished vehicle.
Almost an English Porsche
It is also interesting to read how, thanks to good contacts with Colin Chapman, Lotus parts were occasionally installed in the Porsche in order to take part in competitions and how some technical solutions were reminiscent of the designs of English vehicles.
Successful racer
On five pages, Jürgen Barth looks at the most important racing successes of the 904, which was one of the fastest cars not only in GT races but also in hill climbs for many years.
Facts and figures
The reader learns everything about the technology in the 904, a "probable" number of 112 units is mentioned (six of which were probably fitted with a lightweight body) and all the technical data is compiled at the end of the booklet.
High-quality illustrated book
The book of illustrations starts with six illustrations of posters by graphic artist Erich Strenger, followed by technical drawings and photographs. High-quality, modern photos are complemented by historical images, newspaper clippings and documents from the Porsche archive.
Rare photos of Stirling Moss' former car are featured on 14 pages, as well as historic photos of GT races and the Monte Carlo Rally.
The illustrated book ends with chassis number 092, Ferdinand Alexander "Butzi" Porsche's personal 904, which he never wanted to part with.
Not just for 904 owners
The book is not only a beautiful work for 904 owners (of which there are probably only about a hundred worldwide), but for every Porsche lover.
