The book is not new, but thanks to the popularity of "Jägermeister im Motorsport", there is a constant demand for this successful overview. So it's no surprise that it has now been revised three times.
And because we are just as enthusiastic about these legendary racing cars and their stories, the book should be reviewed here (albeit belatedly).
On 180 pages, the reader receives a complete summary of all Jägermeister vehicles that have ever been used in racing. The famous and beautiful orange racing cars were captured in a fascinating way by photographer Ferdi Kräling and often adorn entire pages of the book. The author elegantly wraps each vehicle in countless anecdotes and provides continuous entertainment from start to finish.
Almost 30 years of Jägermeister
Jägermeister was one of the first major sponsors in motorsport. The Wolfenbüttel-based liqueur manufacturer's involvement began in 1972 with the signing of former world champion Graham Hill and ended in 2000 with an orange Opel racer in the DTM. In between were three decades of ups and downs of success: sometimes great victories, sometimes far behind. But always there and always a favorite in countless classes - from Formula 1 to Group C prototypes to the smallest touring car.
"Who's who" of the racing elite
Well over 100 drivers sat in the cockpit of Jägermeister cars. The list of names reads like a "who's who" of the racing elite: Hans-Joachim Stuck, Niki Lauda, Graham Hill, Stefan Bellof, Klaus Ludwig, Rolf Stommelen, Ronnie Peterson, Manfred Schurti, Jochen Mass, Armin Hahne, Wayne Gardner - the list goes on and on.
Of course, legendary racing times are also being revived: Hans-Joachim Stuck in the Jägermeister Formula 2 March as the "King of Hockenheim", Stefan Bellof as German racing champion in the Porsche 956 or the "golden years" of DRM and DTM.
Told from the perspective of an insider
Eckhard Schimpf, who tells this story of Jägermeister racing, has played an extraordinary role. He has not only negotiated all the contracts over these 30 years, but has also raced himself. He experienced motorsport up close in the cockpit and also observed it from the pits. And he has had an influence on every driver commitment. These different perspectives guarantee unusual insights, fascinating episodes and many unknown details, which Eckhard Schimpf knows how to describe in a gripping way.
The reader can witness countless little stories, for example when Walter Brun asked Eckhard Schimpf before the Norisring race which type of cake he liked best. After he answered the question with "Linzer Torte, for example", the pilot of the small jet they had just arrived in from Lucerne was ordered back to Lucerne to fetch such a Linzer Torte. Later that afternoon, the Linzer Torte was on the table in perfect freshness...
Equally amusing are the episodes about Brun, when he and his partner Maria and mistress Martha told the porter at reception in the Dorian Gray Hotel in Frankfurt: "I need a room with a very wide bed and also a crib, please", pointing with one hand to the young son he had with Martha...
We had already praised the entertaining writing style in our book review " Porsche & Piëch " , and we are happy to repeat at this point that the anecdotes in this book can also be devoured smoothly and without interruption.
The book is rounded off with an extensive statistics section.
