There are 42 hours, 59 minutes and 58.2 seconds between the shortest and the longest pit stop in Formula 1 - a negligible rounding tolerance in the more than 70 years of motorsport history covered by Daniel Reinhard's new book.
The focus is of course on the "premier class" (the title gives it away), but there is also enough space for Group C sports cars, hill climbs with Jo Siffert and a rally chase with Colin McRae. A climb up Mount Fuji, a toilet window and Mick Jagger, on the other hand, only have a very indirect connection with racing cars - but they do. Further explanations in the book (we have to create incentives to buy).
The main difference to the first volume is less text and more pictures. Anyone who sees this as a loss is strongly recommended to buy the book to see for themselves. Because pictures like the one of François Cevert flying over Montjuïc in the evening sun in a Tyrrell 006 don't need a lot of words. Of course, there is still room for personal experiences and curious anecdotes.
For example, how little Nico Rosberg put down the Playstation controller in frustration after just one lap because the photographer, who was so experienced in motorsport, was no great competition in the virtual race. Or how he became friends with a Japanese man in 2008, even though neither of them knew a word of the other's language.
One chapter is also dedicated to Daniel's father Josef Reinhard, who has since passed away.
Photos and stories are not sorted chronologically, but grouped by topic. Whether rivalries between drivers, pit stops or the tunnel in Monte-Carlo - everything contains pictures from several decades, which always allows a direct comparison between the different eras. Or even just to judge which team boss got the cake in the face most gracefully.
Some statements about the previous book can be adopted unchanged for "Lap 2": "Of course, most of the photos are black and white. The closer a race is to the present day, the higher the proportion of color photos. It is therefore all the more remarkable that a few of the few color photos that are over 50 years old are as sharp and true to color as if they were taken yesterday."
And the same applies here: you will look in vain for race results, statistics or telemetry. "Inside Formula 1 - Lap 2" is therefore not a factual, but rather a kind of "emotional reference book" that will certainly bring back memories of times gone by for some viewers.
"Inside Formula 1 - Lap 2" is now available from the Zwischengas store or the Rallye Book Shop in Germany as well as from bookshops for 69 euros or 75 Swiss francs.
