The Bond Street auction at Bonhams headquarters just before Christmas is already a long-standing tradition. On December 15, 2023, 31 cars worth just over £5 million will go under the hammer, half with no reserve price.
Across a century of automobiles
The average age of just over 45 years says little about the breadth of the offer; in fact, the older car is 110 years old, while the eight youngest vehicles are just 13 years old.
Apart from the forties, all decades from the tens of years of the old century are represented.
13 x LHD
At an auction in London, one would normally expect to see mainly right-hand drive cars.
With 17 such vehicles, they are also in the majority, but at the same time 13 cars have left-hand drive, so they are also of interest to continental Europeans. As a monoposto, an old F2 from 1951 has the steering wheel in the middle.
Drive a Ferrari like Eric Clapton
The famous rock guitarist Eric Clapton once had an extensive Ferrari collection. One of his showpieces was a silver-colored 365 GTB/4 Daytona from 1970 with chassis number 13915. Clapton owned the plexi coupé for around twelve years. As if one famous owner was not enough, in the 1970s the twelve-cylinder belonged to the young Lord Hesketh, who later became famous with his F1 racing team, among other things. Hesketh also drove the right-hand drive car for almost a decade. The list of other owners is extensive, and it was restored in the 1980s.
Now £450,000 to £550,000 is expected for the elegant GT.
Classic Astons
In addition to ten young Aston Martins, Bonhams can also offer a whole range of classic models at its headquarters in London.
At £475,000 to £550,000, the most expensive on offer is a restored 1964 Aston Martin DB5 with right-hand drive.
Two DB6s are available for considerably less, while a 1962 DB4 is expected to sell for £160,000 to £220,000, the latter, like the two DB6s, with no reserve price.
Two V8 Vantages from 1988 and 1990 and a DBS Vantage from 1968 complete the package.
The youthful Aston Vantage septet
Youngtimer fans might be interested in seven Aston Martin V8 Vantages from 2010. They all come from a special order from a VIP customer who wanted his cars painted in the livery of famous Astons.
Each of the seven cars will go under the hammer for the same price (£35,000 to £50,000) with no minimum bid. Apparently, the cars have been refurbished after a long period of time and will be sold with copies of Swiss papers and EC-CoC, among other things.
A detailed on-site inspection is certainly advisable here.
In addition to the seven Vantages, Aston fans can also bid on a Vanquish, a DBS from 2009 and a Vantage Le Mans Coupé.
Pre-war quintet
As many as five cars were built before the Second World War, including three Rolls-Royces, a Bentley 3 Litre from 1923 and a Bugatti Type 40 from 1927.
This particular Bugatti, which is said to cost £250,000 to £300,000, is one of around 200 surviving examples with a four-cylinder engine of this type.
Super classics from Germany
Those who are not interested in Aston Martin, pre-war cars or Ferrari (or a Lamborghini Diablo from 1997, which is also on offer) may be better served by well-known classics from Germany.
A Porsche 356 A Carrera 1500 GS from 1957 (£ 450,000 to 500,000), a 911 2.0 liter from 1965 (£ 300,000 to 500,000) and a Mercedes-Benz 190 SL from 1960 (£ 95,000 to 120,000) will be among the cars going under the hammer.
While the Mercedes has the steering wheel on the left, the driver sits on the right in the Porsche, which also applies to the early 930 from 1975 (£ 140,000 to 180,000) and the 996 GT2 from 2002.
Further information and many photos of the cars on offer can be found on the Bonhams website.
