On January 27, 2026, Artcurial will auction 66 automobiles, two motorcycles and a tricycle with an estimated total value of almost 32 million euros at the Peninsula Hotel in Paris. The individual lots have been estimated at an average of around 460,000 euros; 31 of them are being offered without a reserve price. These included the two most expensive cars in the auction, which are expected to fetch up to five million euros each.
One of them is the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, which was bought by French drinks mogul and Olympic sports shooter Claude Foussier in 1956 and is still presented in its first paintwork and with its first interior. In addition to the rare combination of graphite grey bodywork with natural-colored leather upholstery, the "engine with special parts for sporty driving" and the "shock absorbers and springs for sporty driving" also make this "Gullwing" a special example of its kind.
The second superlative at the Artcurial auction in Paris is the Ferrari F92A, in which Jean Alesi contested seven Formula 1 races in the 1992 season (but only finished two) and which was subsequently on display at Alesi's home for 30 years. The Frenchman achieved his best result at the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide, where he finished fourth.
Alesi also finished in the same position on his Formula 1 debut at the 1989 French Grand Prix at the Circuit Paul Ricard. The Tyrrell 018 in which he made this impressive debut is also being auctioned at the Peninsula Hotel. Of the twelve races in the 1989 season, the Frenchman was at the wheel of chassis number 02 six times. In view of the significantly better record (only four retirements), the estimate of 700,000 to 900,000 euros seems almost like a bargain.
Also driven by Jean Alesi, but significantly cheaper again, is the Ferrari 348 Spider with lot number 27, which was delivered to the Ferrari works driver in 1994 and was in his possession until 2015. The red convertible has only covered just under 36,000 kilometers and is expected to fetch 100,000 to 150,000 euros.
The third Formula 1 car in the auction is the McLaren MP4-17D/02, which was driven by David Coulthard in three races of the 2002 season. The Silver Arrow is expected to cost between 1 and 1.5 million euros.
Although not a Formula 1 car, the yellow Lotus Eleven from 1956, which was formerly owned by future Formula 1 world champion Graham Hill, is expected to fetch between 170,000 and 210,000 euros for the car with chassis number 208, 75 percent of which is still fitted with its original bodywork.
The 24 lots with the lowest estimates will all be offered without a reserve price. According to the auction house, the buyer of a Renault 4 Plein Air has to bring the least money. Measured against limousines or delivery vans, however, 20,000 to 30,000 for the beach/bucket car is still a lot of money for an R4.
Artcurial expects 16 of the 66 cars to fetch less than 100,000 euros. For eight others, there is at least the possibility of remaining in the five-figure range. On the other hand, there are ten lots that will definitely exceed the million euro mark. These include a Porsche Carrera GT in "basalt black", which is predicted to fetch between 1.3 and 1.5 million euros.
With seven cars, Porsche is, as so often, the most represented brand in the catalog. However, the name Lamborghini appears just as often. However, in only four cases is it emblazoned on a sports car. The other three are farm equipment. Particularly noteworthy among the bulls is the Miura P400 from 1967 as a rare first-series example, which is said to be worth 1.6 to two million to one bidder.
The 1931 Bugatti 51 as a former works racing car is in similar regions (EUR 1.3 to 2 million). For just under half that amount (600,000-800,000 euros), you could get a Type 37 from 1926 at the Peninsula. The cheapest way to buy a "pre-war" Bugatti at auction, however, is the 35B, a replica built by Pur Sang around 1990, for EUR 250,000 to 350,000.
For those who prefer their French pre-war racing car with fenders, the Talbot-Lago 4.5 Litre from 1939 should be of interest. The monoposto with chassis number 90130 is one of only two examples of the T26 with a drivetrain offset to the left for a lower driving position and thus a lower center of gravity. The car's eventful past includes a victory in the 1939 Grand Prix du Comminges as well as numerous prominent previous owners from the motorsport and racing world, including the later Corvette designer Zora Arkus-Duntov and racing drivers Luigi Chinetti and Harry Schell. Still fitted with the original engine, which is said to have recently been overhauled for 90,000 Swiss francs, the Talbot-Lago 4.5 liter "offset" is expected to fetch 1.2 to 1.6 million euros.
Also light blue, also from France, but much more affordable is the Citroën DS 19 Le Dandy from 1964. The light blue Chapron coupé is said to have been in family ownership until 2020 and will find a new owner in Paris for 170,000 to 230,000 euros.
Further information on the vehicles on offer as well as many additional pictures can be found in the auction house's online catalog.
