C E L S E Carefully developed over a number of years, the heart of the Excel SE is a 2.2 litre Lotus 912S high compression 16-valve engine instantly recognisable by its red painted twin cam covers. This finely honed power unit produces 180 bhp at 6,500 rpm, a top speed of 135 mph and reaches 60 mph in only 6.8 seconds. The improved performance is due in part to an increased cylinder head inlet and exhaust ports which substantially improve air and gas flow, while two twinchoke, triplejet Dellorto carburettors lower exhaust emissions and increase fuel economy to a remarkable 42 mpg at a steady 56 mph. A further contributory factor is the aerodynamic restyling of the SE which can be observed in the deeper stepped front air dam and swept wing rear spoiler. These additions exploit zerolift technology to virtually eliminate aerodynamic lift in both straight and crosswinds, adding improved grip to an already enviable drag factor of 0.32. State of the art, 215/50 VR15 Goodyear Eagle tyres on exclusive Lotu" designed Speedline alloy rims give improved wet weather roadholding and enhance the feeling of confidence already established in the driving seat. Confidence that is futher justified by the addition of central door locking and an ice warning system now fitted as standard.
