... oon The very high performance of the Type 405 saloon is the least obtrusive of its virtues. Its sophisticated elegance and superb comfort belong to the town carriage and tend to disguise its ability to cover great distances in astonishingly short times. The overdrive fifth gear permits a high cruising speed to be maintained effortlessly at moderate engine rpm and, since the clean aerodynamic form of the body considerably reduces wind resistance, the Bristol 405 achieves a standard of unusual ease and silence at very high speeds. The excellence of appointment derives equally from classical coachcraft and modern scientific techniques. A notably capacious luggage boot occupies the whole tail and extends into both rear wings, but the suspension geometry has been so regulated that, even with the boot fully laden, the change in weight distribution does not impair the car's magnificent handling qualities. For the owner who exercises discrimination in his choice of car, the Type 405 offers a balanced combination of the thoroughbred qualities of good manners, stamina and uncommon performance, which has singular appeal. Both bodies are composite structures in which various materials are selected for particular purposes and com bined to the best advantage.
