In August 1970, the VW 1302 appeared with a new chassis, longer wheelbase, larger trunk and more powerful engines. The progress made on the new Beetle was commendable, but problems and criticisms remained. This historical test sheds light on the peculiar car that wanted to break out of its Beetle shell but could not and was not allowed to.
For most people, the VW Beetle is the Volkswagen par excellence, in every sense of the word. A car for the people, a people's car. And the Beetle was indeed an above-average success. Up until the 1970s, the VW Beetle was not only a popular car, but performance upgrades to its engine were also common. One person who was particularly colorful was Theo Decker, who helped the 1302 S achieve 135 hp and performance that is still striking today.
