Four-wheel drive was no longer new at Volkswagen in 1989, but the fact that the VW Golf was raised and given a brute off-road vehicle look was still something of a sensation. The result even went into series production and drove quite convincingly, even if the high-traction VW Golf Country was more suitable for asphalt and gravel than for rough terrain.
