At the end of 1970, Toyota broke new ground with the introduction of the Celica model, a sporty coupé for the mass market. The car sold excellently, not least because of its robust nature, low prices, full equipment and pleasing design. This report portrays an early Toyota Celica 1600 ST Coupé and tells the story of the first Celica generation, accompanied by many pictures and an original sales brochure.
From 1970 to 2005, Toyota built seven generations of a sports coupé called the Celica. In each case, the technology was based on saloon models built in parallel. The Celica vehicles were successful both on the market and in racing. The Zwischengas archive contains many articles and contributions on the Toyota Celica. In 1974, Opel finally dared to cross the 100 hp threshold with its flagship coupé Manta. Toyota had already shown this courage some time ago with its coupé star Celica GT, which mobilized 108 hp and thus had 3 hp more under the hood than the GT/E from Opel. Here is a direct comparison of these two GT versions from back then.
Five mid-range coupés from four countries were compared by the magazine 'hobby' in 1975: Toyota Celica, Ford Capri II, Renault R15, Fiat 128 SL and VW Scirocco. And the question was whether the beauty of the cars would win out over their reduced utility value. This carefully edited original comparison test from 1975 reproduces the text and findings and is illustrated with many additional archive images.
