In 1963, Hobby compiled the ten fastest sports cars in the opinion of the editors and compared them according to their characteristics. The contestants were: Aston-Martin DB 4, Chevrolet Corvette, Ferrari 250 GTO, Maserati 3500 GT, Ferrari 400 Superamerica, Jaguar Type E, Mercedes Benz 300 SL, Porsche Carrera 2, Maserati 5000 GT and Studebaker Avanti. However, it is not easy to get over the fact that the Hobby people made a mistake with the picture of the 250 GTO.
In around twelve months, Studebaker built a new sports car in 1962, which Raymond Loewy had given an individual look. The car had many modern attributes, but it was not able to save Studebaker. This report shows a 1963 supercharged car in detail and describes the technical solutions chosen.
On December 10, 1963, Studebaker ceased to build cars in the USA. The company had been more or less successful since 1904, but the deteriorating management towards the end was no longer able to avert bankruptcy. The factory's last model was the Avanti; it was launched by the then Studebaker president Sherwood Egbert and star designer Raymond Loewy.
