When Porsche replaced the 356 with the 911, the (price) leap was too great for many loyal Porsche customers. The 912, which saw the return of the four-cylinder engine in the new sports car, filled the gap between the 356 and the 911 and was obviously quite successful, as customers bought and the testers, in this case 'hobby', were impressed by the product. This article reproduces the original wording of the early 912 test and shows the car in historical illustrations.
In 1967, the magazine 'hobby' compared the BMW 1600 GT, which had just emerged from the Glas 1700 GT, with the model-maintained Porsche 912 from Zuffenhausen. Although they appeared to be completely different, the comparison ended in a draw. This article reproduces the original wording of the meticulously conducted comparison test. The report is illustrated with original photos from the time.
In 1965, Porsche introduced the 912, equipped with the four-cylinder engine from the 356 SC, as the entry-level model to the 911 series, which sold very successfully in the USA in particular, but also in Europe. However, it was replaced by a six-cylinder base model as early as 1969. This vehicle report portrays a Targa model from 1968 and tells the story of the entire model series, illustrated with many current and historical pictures as well as the sales brochure from 1965.
