The M1 was Motorsport GmbH's first competition car without a production model. And it was born with pincers, because first there were problems with production, then a suitable racing series had to be invented first. Nevertheless, the M1 was a success, at least from a marketing perspective. Today, M1 vehicles are highly sought after by collectors and brand enthusiasts. This report describes the development and racing history of the BMW M1 and shows it in prototype, production and racing versions in many historical and current pictures.
Only four chassis numbers of this racing car are known, two of which raced, one of which has survived to this day. We met the racing car and owner at Goodwood and report on this motorsport rarity with almost 90 photos.

When the new "Group C" racing series was announced in Europe, starting in 1982, BMW wanted to gain initial experience as early as possible. For this reason, a new car was designed in collaboration with March Engineering to meet the new requirements.
