In the mid-1980s, the BMW M 635 CSi and the Alpina B7 Turbo Coupé were the fastest ways to drive a BMW Granturismo. As similar as they were on the outside, they went completely different ways under the hood: four-valve versus turbo technology. Even back then, the automotive world was interested in which was better. This driving report compares the top coupés from BMW and Alpina and shows them in many photos.
The BMW-Alpina B9 3.5 was certainly not a wolf in sheep's clothing, because with spoilers at the front and rear, large wheels and eye-catching ornamentation, it was more reminiscent of a tiger than a sheep. And rightly so, after all there were only a few cars that could compete with it on the road. It remained rare as an exclusive automobile and is still a lot of fun to drive today. In 1984, Ferrari presented the Testarossa super sports car, followed five years later by the small luxury car manufacturer Alpina with the B10 Biturbo, which could easily compete with the Ferrari in terms of performance. As a modified five-seater of the E34 series, however, the Alpina had lost none of its suitability for everyday use for transporting up to five people and luggage. So was the B10 Biturbo the better alternative and what does it look like today, 25 years later?
