Racing driver Steve Saleen founded his tuning company specializing in Ford Mustangs in 1983 in Irvine, California. The first street car was built in 1984, followed by over 70 other street versions of racing sports cars. The Saleen S7, the road-going version of the S7R, a super sports car with a mid-engine and spectacularly shaped coupé body made of carbon fiber material, which was presented in autumn 2000, caused a sensation: 477.5 cm long, 199 cm wide, 104 cm high, with scissor doors and numerous air vents. The large piston engine was a Ford-based 7-L V8 with a central camshaft, light alloy block and heads and an output of 558 hp. The power transmission was a 6-speed gearbox. The load-bearing structure consisted of a tubular steel frame and honeycomb elements made of composite material, and the suspension consisted of double triangular wishbones all round.
