Hershey is located between the Appalachian Mountains and the Blue Mountains and is traditionally a meeting place for automobile enthusiasts interested in historic vehicles. Hershey is also known as the center of the Anique Automobile Club of America. Every year, RM/Sotheby's auctions rare and vintage automobiles, automobilia and motorcycles at the Eastern Division AACA National Fall Meet.
On October 4 and 5, 2023, the time had come again and over 300 lots came under the hammer over two days, including 138 motorized vehicles. They had been estimated in advance at a value of around USD 13.2 million, meaning that each vehicle was expected to fetch around USD 96,000. 100 of them, i.e. 72%, were auctioned without a reserve price, guaranteeing a high sales rate.
With 91% of the vehicles sold, the auction was a success. On average, bidders went for up to 79% of the median estimate, but there were considerable swings both upwards and downwards.
American-influenced offer
The most represented brands were Cadillac (18 vehicles), Ford (16), Packard (16), Chevrolet (9), Oldsmobile (6) and Pierce Arrow (6). The other brands represented and their cars were also mostly American-made.
However, there were also some European cars up for auction, including those built by Mercedes-Benz (2), Rolls-Royce (2), BMW, Fiat, Lagonda, MG, Volvo and Volkswagen (1 each).
Old to antique cars
On average, the auctioned vehicles were around 83 years old, the year of construction ranged from 1902 to 1981, the majority, namely 89 vehicles, were from the pre-war period (up to and including 1942).
The Auburn, Packard and Pierce-Arrow cars on offer were particularly old, while the three Dodges were comparatively young at 63 years old on average.
High-flyer Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost
By far the most expensive car sold was a 1909 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost 40/50 HP with "Roi de Belges" bodywork in the style of Barker.
Although the highest bid of USD 650,000 was not immediately enough to win the auction, the recently fully restored car finally changed hands for USD 698,500 (EUR 656,590, CHF 635,635) after renegotiations.
Two Auburn Twelve cars, a 1934 Salon Cabriolet and a 1933 Salon Speedster, also fetched high prices, moving to a new garage for USD 400,000 and 350,000 respectively.
Embattled steam mobile
A Stanley Model F from 1908 as a "Side-Entrance Touring" model caused a prolonged bidding war, which ended at USD 260,000 instead of the expected USD 130,000 to 160,000.
The car thus found a new owner for an impressive USD 286,000 (EUR 268,840, CHF 260,260).
Also hotly contested was a 1954 Hudson Italia with bodywork by Touring Superleggera from Italy. The sale price was listed at USD 495,000 (EUR 465,300, CHF 450,450), which was well above the estimated value of USD 250,000 to 350,000.
A Volvo PV 544 from 1962 and a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Piccadilly Roadster from 1926 with a European background also clearly outperformed their estimates.
Some bargains
But there were also bargain cars in Hershey.
For example, a 1941 Cadillac Series 61 coupé only cost USD 18,700, a 1922 Pierce-Arrow Model 33 fetched just USD 20,900 and a 1973 Jaguar E-Type V12 roadster could be purchased for as little as USD 60,500 (estimated at USD 90,000 to 120,000).
There was no correlation between age and deviation from the estimated value; for most American brands, the highest bids were around 70 to 85% of the mean estimated value.
The three Hudson (benefiting from the Italia) and the three Stanley (driven by the aforementioned 1908 car) performed better.
With total sales of USD 10.2 million for the 125 cars and motorcycles sold, RM/Sotheby's must have been quite satisfied after the two-day event, although a few consignors may have seen things differently.
