RM's virtual monthly auctions under the title "Open Roads" have already become a habit. From May 19 to 26, 2021, 49 cars and one small motorcycle were offered online, 27 vehicles found a new owner, who paid an average of EUR 64,714 or CHF 71,028 per lot.
The highest bids reached an average of 81 percent of the median estimate. The majority of the vehicles were registered from the USA, but there were also cars from the EU, the UK and Switzerland.
Contested Toyota Supra
There were no real high-flyers at the auction. The biggest surprise was a small Honda Z50A K2 Mini Trail motorcycle from 1971, which sold well above expectations.
However, a Toyota Supra Turbo in the "15th Anniversary" version from 1997 also made a good showing. The automatic coupé with the huge rear wing had been estimated in advance at USD 60,000 to 70,000. The highest bidder was able to acquire the Japanese sports car for EUR 63,140 or CHF 69,300.
Another winged car, a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, sold for considerably more. Only 139 factory versions with manual gearboxes were built in 1969, so it is no wonder that the estimated value was USD 275,000 to 325,000. The new owner did not have to spend quite that much, USD 269,500 (EUR 220,990, CHF 242,550) was enough to buy it.
A Porsche 911 Turbo 3.3 from 1992 was another sports car with a rear wing on offer. Here, USD 110,000 was enough to win the bid (including commission).
Only one pre-war car
Only one car from the period before the Second World War came under the virtual hammer. It was a Cartercar Model 7 Touring from 1914, which was to be sold for EUR 30,000 to 45,000.
However, nobody wanted to bid that much, and the bids did not go higher than EUR 20,500.
Affordable super classics
Although the average estimate was relatively low, super classics also went under the hammer at the open-road auction.
For example, there was a right-hand drive Ferrari 365 GT/4 BB from 1974 from England, which previously belonged to Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman.
Estimated at GBP 210,000 to 240,000, the bid was GBP 190,000, selling the early BB for a reasonable EUR 241,646 or CHF 265,221.
A left-hand drive Dino 246 GT from 1971 from the same collection also landed roughly below expectations. EUR 260,723 or CHF 286,160 was enough for the takeover.
A 1962 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 Litre from the USA also sold for less than expected. It ultimately went for USD 165,000 (EUR 135,300, CHF 148,500).
The Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 from 1977, which was once exported across the Atlantic, changed hands for just USD 22,000 (EUR 18,040, CHF 19,800).
Well-finished Mk II
The sale price for a Jaguar Mk II 3.8 from 1964 shows that it was possible to pick up a bargain at this auction.
EUR 22,559 or CHF 24,760 was enough to buy the car, which was once delivered by Emil Frey in Switzerland and in which a lot had been invested in recent years.
You could also buy the 1970 Meyers Tow'd, a very special buggy with a 1.88-liter VW engine and minimalist bodywork, for very little money. USD 12,100 (EUR 9922, CHF 10,890) was enough to become the proud owner of a rather special beach companion.
