A well-known online dictionary defines "granary" as a place for storing tangible or intangible objects and the reader may spontaneously think of grain and not vehicles. Which is not so wrong, because the PS.Speicher in Einbeck is a former granary that is over a hundred years old and is a listed building. At the same time, it is the centerpiece of an ultra-modern world of experience on the subject of 130 years of mobility.
Already open for four years
The museum was opened to the public in its current form in 2014 and was founded by entrepreneur and collector Karl-Heinz Rehkopf. He brought in the world's largest collection of German motorcycles and added further vehicles to it, including the largest collection of small and micro cars (formerly Museum Störy).
The result is a unique collection on 4000 square meters of exhibition space (permanent exhibition), which is housed in the main building - the former warehouse - and is supplemented by other buildings. Here you will find a restaurant worth mentioning as well as a conference hotel and a racing simulator.
... and external warehouse
In addition to the museum, the PS.Speicher facility also has external storage facilities and vehicle depots to store the many vehicles that cannot all be shown as part of the permanent exhibition and special shows.
One of these depots, for example, is dedicated to microcars and can be visited on a few days a year as part of special events.
Impressive
The mighty brick building can be seen from afar. But inside, the vehicles are not simply lined up in a row. Rather, the past, present and future of mobility is shown with over 350 exhibits using clever museum didactics and an appealing presentation.
So let's embark on an educational journey through time at PS.Speicher...
From the past to the future
After visitors have had a look around the spacious, bright entrance hall and learned a little about the history of car body construction, we first go to the top of the sixth floor. We start in the past and begin with the wheel, only to find ourselves shortly afterwards in front of the roadworthy (!) "Benz Victoria" motor coach from 1893.
Subsequently, the development of the vehicle can be experienced and explored step by step and decade by decade.
Those interested in technology will discover astonishing things, such as the first motorcycle built in series in 1894 (!). It was built by the Hildebrand & Wolfmüller company and its rear wheel is driven by connecting rods, just like a locomotive.
A little later, a small two-seater Hanomag - aptly named "Kommissbrot" because of its shape - joins a mighty Horch eight-cylinder Type 350 saloon.
Dark and cheerful hours
The period before the Second World War is depicted using the "KdF car", which would later go down in automotive history as the "Beetle", and is aptly characterized by the phrase "Planned for the people - used for the war".
Two correspondingly differently designed halves of the car visualize this quite memorably.
A little later, the horror of the war and its destruction becomes tangible.
A car with a wood carburetor is symptomatic of the post-war period, as the shortage of raw materials forced people to look for alternatives.
It continues with the typical micro-mobiles of this era. Until, at the end, you are back at the bottom and full of new impressions.
Active and multimedia
The consistently convincing museum concept should be emphasized, which makes it possible to deepen the respective social and historical aspects interactively. In general, the PS.Speicher invites visitors to join in at around 90 "active stations", which are by no means just the "selfie stations".
The author of these lines voluntarily took a theoretical driving test from 1935, but unfortunately was unable to answer two out of ten questions correctly...
The decoration is also impressive. The loving replica of a milk bar from the 1950s deserves a special mention. You can even play your favorite song from a Wurlitzer jukebox free of charge! Another impressive feature is the window display with utensils and furniture from the 1960s.
Also electric
The journey through time ends in the future and with the presentation of electromobility and alternative drive concepts such as the fuel cell.
Even if you find the museum - in keeping with its history - a little "two-wheeled" at times, a visit to the PS.Speicher is highly recommended - both for technology freaks and for a family outing.
At the very end, you should take some time to visit the well-stocked museum store.
Interesting special exhibitions and events
Time and again, the museum makers have also organized special exhibitions in the granary, e.g. on the subject of motor sports or electromobility. Many clubs also meet in Einbeck.
And on special days, you can also take a look at the cars stored in the depots. Highly recommended.
No beer idea
So if you've only ever associated the town of Einbeck with beer, this excellent museum will prove you wrong. And if you want to find out more about the original purpose of the granary: no problem, its function is also demonstrated in detail.
