It's July, a Thursday, 7:00 am. It smells of coffee. The dog is yawning. A slightly cloudy day. Everything is actually quite normal. But I'm excited, because nothing is "normal" today. Instead of sitting at breakfast, we slowly roll off in our family van. Four weeks' worth of luggage in the trunk, just for me. I still can't really grasp what lies ahead of me. I've had half a year to prepare for it, but now that it's starting, my knees are weak. We are on our way to the train station, where I board the train to Frankfurt Airport. I meet up with friends there. They are taking me to Chicago - on Route 66! At last!
