Benjamin Berkeley Hotchkiss from Connecticut, USA, had supplied Napoleon III with ammunition systems, machine guns and cannons that he had developed himself and had set up workshops in France for this purpose. He had long since passed away when Société Hotchkiss turned to automobile construction in 1903 and also dedicated itself to precision in this sector; the trademark with the two crossed cannon barrels was retained. Four-cylinder cars with cardan drive and racing cars with a displacement of up to 15.6 liters were constructed. Six-cylinder models were added in 1907. The Hotchkiss rear axle drive with suspension-damped cardan thrust became a household name.
