Wilhelm Gutbrod founded the Standard motorcycle brand in Ludwigsburg in 1926. From 1933 to 1935, he also built the rear-engined Standard Superior small car designed by engineer Josef Ganz and then small delivery vans until 1954. Introduced in 1949 as the Moto-Standard and sold from 1950 as the Gutbrod Superior , the two-seater convertible coupé was more of a small car than a micro-car. It was based on a central tubular frame, had front-wheel drive, a two-cylinder two-stroke engine with 593 cm3 and offered safe driving characteristics. Gutbrod GmbH, Plochingen am Neckar, managed by son Walter, founded Gutbrod Motorenbau GmbH in Calw near Stuttgart for its production.
