Record prices and veritable disappointments went hand in hand at the Gooding & Co auction in Amelia Island on March 7, 2014. While the auction house reported 16 new records, some sellers had to be satisfied with prices well below expectations. A total of 78 vehicles (89% sold) changed hands for over USD 30 million (EUR 22 million or CHF 27 million, including bidder surcharges/commissions), 10 lots could not be sold, with the highest bidders paying an average of USD 391,700 (EUR 282,000, CHF 344,700) per vehicle (including commission). The highest bids reached an average of 82% of the median estimate. However, downward and upward swings were the order of the day. In any case, there was no shortage of spectators, all the chairs were occupied at the beginning and the room only emptied towards the end. The individual vehicles rolled past the audience onto the stage and presented themselves in the best light.
