Gooding & Co Scottsdale 2017 - solid results or too much of a gamble?
Summary
On January 20 and 21, 2017, Gooding & Co auctioned 126 vehicles worth well over USD 50 million, including 24 Ferraris and 23 Porsches, as well as exotic cars such as the AMX/3 and one of the Squire, of which only a handful were built. With a sales rate of 84%, Gooding can actually be satisfied, but the hammer prices were well below expectations across the board and a number of "blue chip" classics did not find a new owner. On the other hand, there were new records for Ferrari, Bugatti, Porsche and AMC. This auction report analyzes the results and shows many of the auctioned vehicles in pictures.

The Scottsdale/Arizona auctions always herald the start of the international auction year, as was the case in 2017, where Gooding was traditionally the last major organizer after Bonhams and RM/Sotheby's to bring 126 vehicles, including a few motorcycles, worth over USD 55 million under the hammer on Friday and Saturday evenings. Expectations were high, with a lot expected to fetch around USD 440,000 on average, but the reality was somewhat rougher, as at the end of the two well-attended auction sessions, USD 315,327 had been paid per vehicle. The sales rate was 84.1%, and the total proceeds of around USD 33.4 million (EUR 31 million, CHF 33.4 million) were almost 40% below expectations, as some valuable cars in particular were left behind.
