Great Britain produced a particularly large number of new car brands in the post-war period. But not all of them were created in England; there were also a few from Scotland ... and Gilbern from Wales. Gilbern Sports Cars & Components Ltd was founded in 1959 by Giles Smith and the German GRP specialist Bernhard Friese in Pontypridd, Glamorgan. The first letters of their first names formed the brand name. Initially, only kits were supplied. The beautifully shaped 2+2-seater plastic body, only 381 cm long, was to be mounted on a tubular frame chassis. It was powered by the 948 cc engine from BMC, which produced 68 hp with a supercharger on request, but the 1.1 L sports engine from Coventry Climax was also suitable.
