The best travel guide is not necessarily ChatGPT, Instagram or the good old Lonely Planet - but often chance. This was also the case on a trip through the Northern Territory in Australia. The sparsely populated state is almost four times the size of Germany, but is home to only around 260,000 people. We are about 230 km south of Darwin on the Stuart Highway when the fuel gauge on our Subaru Outback indicates that it's time for a refueling stop. So we head for the small village of Pine Creek. The settlement consists of a few houses, a petrol station, an old railroad station and - most importantly - a typical Australian pub called the Lazy Lizard Tavern. It's the perfect opportunity to stop for a refuel and fortify ourselves with food and cold drinks.
