The history of the DeLorean brand began promisingly, took a complicated course and ended dramatically. John Z. DeLorean, once an engineer at Studebaker-Packard, then a driving force at Pontiac and from 1969 head of Chevrolet, was already being touted as the next president of General Motors when he unexpectedly resigned in 1973 to devote himself and a team of specialists to the development of his dream car: The DSV = DeLorean Safety Vehicle, a two-seater with a rear engine, gullwing doors, plastic structures and occupant protection optimized with computer assistance; the design was created by Giorgetto Giugiaro.
