In 1988, Bruno Saby won the rally in a Lancia, followed by Alex Fiorio in another Lancia. Third place went to privateer Jean-Pierre Ballet, who drove a Peugeot 205 GTI. As early as 1989, the fast drivers reached the speeds of the Group B times again; the overall average speed of the fastest special stage drivers was 88 km/h, even higher than the 1986 average (86 km/h).
