For the 50th anniversary of the Monte-Carlo Rally, the organizing committee under the presidency of Michel Boeri came up with a number of ideas. After a journey of around 1,400 kilometers from eight starting locations, practically all 299 starters arrive in the Savoy seaside resort of Aix-les-Bains on 17 January. It's hard to describe the organized chaos: material storage, stacks of tires and rims, transport trucks, assistance vehicles, caravans, the rally cars themselves and a huge crowd of curious spectators. A first-class advertising frenzy and when Röhrl's sponsor - the tobacco multinational Rothmans - announces filming shortly before the start, the filmers film without Röhrl, the photographers take pictures without Röhrl and the journalists write without Röhrl. Röhrl is professional enough to know that without a sponsor he cannot pursue his profession, his passion. Nevertheless, he creates a respectful distance from the arrogant cigarette salesman. In the meditative preparation phase, he crashes the media conference. That's what makes Röhrl so likeable to me, and not just because of his absolute record in the Chartreuse: 25 minutes and 42 seconds - an average of 102.7 km/h. Unbelievable.
