In 1960, the 44-kilometre Chartreuse made headlines: Icy, partly snow-covered, the required average speed of 50 km/h could never be achieved by the majority of the 298 starting crews. Mercedes dispenses with the spikes that are slowly coming into fashion - they still cause too many flat feet. In an emergency, the Swabians mount snow chains, even on the front tires, but otherwise rely on the English tire brand Dunlop and achieve a triple victory with Schock/Moll, Böhringer/Socher and Ott/Mahle all on Mercedes-Benz 220SE. The decision was not made in the Chartreuse but around the Col de Turini, which was crossed twice.
