The Rennsport Reunion V took place at the Laguna Seca Raceway in the USA from September 25-27, 2015. The Rennsport Reunion V has been held regularly since 2001, in Laguna Seca it is now the 5th event in a row and still allows all spectators a fascinating journey through Porsche racing history and is therefore already a must for all Porsche and racing fans.
This year, the world's largest event with historic Porsche racing cars and legendary racing drivers once again attracted almost 60,000 spectators and over 320 Porsche racing cars to the Monterey area, breaking all records in the process.
Eleven Le Mans winners
No fewer than eleven famous racing drivers, all of whom have won at least once for Porsche at Le Mans, took part in Reunion V, giving the numerous fans in attendance plenty of opportunity to talk to them and get a coveted autograph.
At the age of 25, this year's Le Mans winner Earl Bamber was by far the youngest. The oldest was Hans Herrmann, who had already won the endurance classic in 1970. Also present were: Richard Attwood (1970), Jacky Ickx (1976, 1977, 1981, 1982), Gijs van Lennep (1976), Hurley Haywood (1977, 1983, 1994), Jürgen Barth (1977), Derek Bell (1981, 1982, 1986, 1987), Vern Schuppan (1983), Hans-Joachim Stuck (1986, 1987) and Nick Tandy, who won together with Earl Bamber that year.
"These cars are incredible"
Motorsport legend Hans-Joachim Stuck was visibly impressed by the atmosphere at Rennsport Reunuion V. He was particularly taken with the Porsche 962 in which he won the 12-hour race at Sebring in 1986: "This victory was a milestone in my career."
But he was also very enthusiastic in other respects and continued: "The cars you see here are simply incredible; they are all in unbelievable condition. And the best thing is that I've raced in many of them."
For Stuck, it was his first participation in a racing reunion. He revealed: "I had also received invitations before, but somehow the date always coincided with a race weekend. But if I had known how fantastic this event was, I would have immediately canceled all my commitments and come straight here."
"A special place in my heart"
The only Porsche racing driver to have taken part in all five Rennsport Reunions between 2001 and 2015 is Hurley Haywood. However, this does not make it a routine event for him and he was once again infected by the atmosphere. "The event has never been as brilliantly organized as this year and there have never been so many beautiful Porsche cars to see at once as we were able to experience here today," said Hurley Haywood, who is known to have won three times for Porsche at Le Mans. He even won the 24-hour classic in Daytona five times.
"I was delighted to see how many visitors brought their children along to share their fascination for Porsche with them. I am sure that they will remain fans for the rest of their lives." When asked which was his favorite car, he frowned: "That's like asking a father which is his favorite child. I have a very special connection to all of them."
After some thought, however, he decided: "I've always had a soft spot for the Porsche 936, in which I won Le Mans together with Jacky Ickx and Jürgen Barth in 1977. The car in which we celebrated our first victory at Le Mans will certainly always have a very special place in our hearts."
Le Mans legends in the USA
A total of over 320 Porsche racing cars came together in Laguna Seca, divided into six classes. If you include all the club and exhibition cars, over 1400 Porsche vehicles were presented to the spectators. Porsche spared no expense in completing the range of different vehicle types. Some classic cars from the Porsche Museum were flown in especially for the event. Among many other legends, the Porsche 936, which Derek Bell drove to overall victory in 1981, made its rounds.
Equally impressive, however, was the field called the "Weissach Cup", in which almost two dozen legendary late sixties took part. It is very rare to see so many 906s, 908s, 910s and 917s on the track at the same time. At the Rennsport Reunion V, for example, you could marvel at the legendary Jo-Siffert 907 longtail or around five Cerrera 6 models, which you hardly ever see in this number in Europe.
Those who love the Gulf-painted Porsches got their money's worth. Three Porsche 917s in the familiar orange and blue livery were on the track at the same time! A picture that you don't even get to see at the Le Mans Classic.
Curiosities at the start
In addition to well-known racing cars, there were also a few oddities to discover. For example, a Porsche Cooper Pooper, a Cooper racing car fitted with a Porsche engine, joined the field of Porsche 356s and 550s. And because this car beat many factory Porsches at the end of the 1950s, it quickly became known among Porsche fans as the "Pooper" (spoilsport).
The Devin D, the name of a vehicle built by the Devin company in 1957, which had the drivetrain of a Porsche 356 underneath it, was certainly also one of the exotic cars.
The crowd also included a Porsche Sabel Mk1 Prototype from 1963 and two special versions, the Elva-Porsche MK VII and the Dolphin-Porsche, which have also been seen here in Europe.
Many premieres
Porsche LMP drivers Mark Webber, Brendon Hartley and Neel Jani also made their first appearance at Rennsport Reunion V this year. And so they could hardly save themselves from interviews with journalists and the fans were also prepared to queue for a long time to get an autograph.
The American crowd also witnessed some demonstration laps of the Porsche 919 Hybrid, the 2015 Le Mans winner, for the first time this year. Not many Americans have time to see the Le Mans prototypes live in the Sarthe, so this was certainly a treat for many fans to see and hear this car. The response on social networks such as Facebook and Google+ was very positive and many were amazed by the impressive engine sound coming out of the 919's exhaust pipes.
"Young racing drivers need to know what it was like back then"
There was great joy at the reunion of Hans Herrmann and Jacky Ickx on the opening evening of Rennsport Reunion V. "It's always nice to be reunited with so many drivers from the past and talk to them about the old days," said Hans Hermann, Porsche's first Le Mans winner in the Porsche 917K, back then together with Richard Attwood. "It's important for the future that these memories stay alive. Young drivers need to know what it was like back then, when the steering wheels were still made of wood and there were no computers."
Memories of Mark Donohue
Although the Porsche RS Spyder was built back in 2007, it only made its racing debut at this year's Rennsport Reunion. Kevin Jeanette only managed to acquire the racing car from a private collector just three weeks ago. David Donohue got behind the wheel of this car, bringing back many memories of his father Mark Donohue. In 2009, he won in Daytona with a Riley Porsche by just 0.167 seconds and thus went down in racing history with the closest finish in a 24-hour race.
For fans of historic racing, however, Mark Donohue will probably be remembered above all for his races in the horsepower monster Porsche 917/30 with the legendary Sunoco livery.
Childhood sweetheart
Earl Bamber was only 7 years old and had just started his karting career when the new Porsche GT1 took the 16th overall victory for Porsche at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1998. "Even back then I dreamed of one day sitting in a car like this," says the New Zealander, "but I never thought I would be one of the drivers fighting for the next Le Mans victory for Porsche."
But that is exactly what happened almost three months ago. At the wheel of the Porsche 919 Hybrid, together with Nick Tandy and Nico Hülkenberg, he recorded the 17th victory for Porsche in the world's most famous endurance race.
At Rennsport Reunion V, there was a reunion with the Porsche GT1, which he had once idolized alongside many other historic Porsche racing cars. He would still like to drive such a historic Porsche one day, but he still has a few races to win first.
