Over three days (June 8-10), around 18,000 spectators were able to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of historic racing, made all the more impressive by the picturesque scenery of the Nordschleife in the Eifel region. Although the weather forecast predicted cool winds and scattered rain showers, many people flocked to this magical place of motorsport. The fact that the sun was shining for the most part made the weekend an intense experience.
Above all, this event was characterized by diversity, with treats for every taste:
- As at the Hockenheim Historics, the dwarves also raced for victory here
- Around 80 pre-war vehicles gathered in the historic paddock and took to the track once a day to complete their laps on the Grand Prix circuit and the Nordschleife.
- Porsche Kremer Racing had every reason to celebrate: 50 vehicles completed their 50th anniversary laps in the evening hours
- The displacement monsters of the Canadian American Series (CanAm) delighted the spectators with an impressive engine sound and impressive battles for the front positions
- The large gathering of the glorious Veritas brand was a world sensation, with over 20 of these vehicles taking part in the "Meeting of Legends"
- Lovers of the sixties got their money's worth during the races of the FHR HTGT (Historic Touring Car and GT Trophy).
- And then, of course, the main attraction of the weekend: The 3-hour Eifel race around the Nordschleife! Endurance fans and spectators who wanted to see action were looking forward to these hours during the weekend: 160 vehicles battled for position and victory on the combined long circuit - Grand Prix track and Nordschleife - for three hours. It was like the old days!
The 3-hour Eifel race - 160 cars in 2 fields - 14 seconds separate gold from silver
You knew it before the start: the drivers would be pushing themselves to the limit for three hours! The spectators waited all the more eagerly for the start. The two fields "FHR Endurance Cup" and "Youngtimer Trophy" were released onto the track one after the other, the faster field logically first. The idyllic rustling in the woods of the Nordschleife and the spring-like twittering of birds was soon accompanied by distant engine noises.
For minutes, the roar of the engines could be heard echoing through the woods, sometimes closer, then further away. Suddenly, however, the volume rose steadily and it got really loud, the heads of the spectators stretched out and looked eagerly towards the earliest visible bend...
And then the first racers shot around the bend and it was immediately clear: every second counts here! The banked curve of the "Karussell", which is located in the eastern part of the Nordschleife, was particularly impressive. The fastest cars in the race literally flew into the dip and maneuvered vibrantly towards the exit. The aim of this very special section of the track is clear: to pick up as much speed as possible for the "Hohe Acht", the steepest section of the Nordschleife, which begins immediately after the exit of the carousel.
14 seconds ahead after 180 minutes: The thrilling final phase is representative of the entertaining action. After 3:00.04.012 hours, Dr. Edgar Althoff crossed the finish line of the ADAC Eifelrennen in first place in his violet-green Porsche Carrera RSR #327. Second-placed Daniel Schrey needed just 13.927 seconds (!) more for the 18-lap distance in his yellow Kremer Porsche 935 K1 #502. "That was a really thrilling finish to a very exciting race overall - and therefore a perfect example of the thrilling motorsport on offer to the fans this year.
Our photo gallery shows many exciting moments, mainly at the roundabout, as well as a few impressions from the pit lane!
Battle of the dwarves
The participants in their compact and maneuverable vehicles are always very popular with the spectators. Although they are all small in shape and displacement, this discipline is not called the "Battle of the Dwarves" for nothing. Every position counts, the earlier you finish, the more points you score. The scramble in the large field of small vehicles often degenerates into fierce battles and this is of course particularly fun for the spectators.
Various series raced simultaneously around the Nürburgring GP circuit, this year including the "Abarth-Coppa-Mile", "NSU-TT-Trophy", the "British-Car-Trophy" and the "Fiat-Simca-1300-Histo-Cup".
The fact that the drivers were also pushing the limits of their equipment and driving skills here was demonstrated by the many spins and slips. Some of them even had to abandon their vehicles. The drivers pushed the suspension components to the limit to such an extent that they repeatedly lifted off the rear wheel on the inside of the bend, something that was not seen to this extent in other series.

Thundering elephants
This year's presence of pre-war vehicles was particularly exciting. The "8th Vintage Nürburgring" organized by the Classic Drivers Club filled the historic paddock with extremely valuable cars from the period 1900 to 1940. Well-known brands such as Bentley, Bugatti, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, MG and Jaguar were part of the gathering, but rarer brands were not missing either: many spectators' eyes wandered from very old contemporaries such as De Dion (1908) or Locomobile (1916) to Invicta, Alvis and Riley from the 1930s to Veritas, HRG and Healey from the 1940s.
On each of the three days of the event, these treasures from the last century were invited onto the track, once for laps of the GP Nürburgring circuit and twice on the Nordschleife.
Our photo gallery shows many impressions of the GP circuit and the Nordschleife. When looking at the photos, it is striking how different the pictures of the Nordschleife look when such original contemporaries adorn the race track...
50 years of Porsche Kremer Racing
Motorsport, Porsche, overall victories and traditional racing team - that's how you could describe the famous Kremer Racing Team in a nutshell! Overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona and Spa and numerous drivers' titles in the German Racing Championship, the Interseries and the GT European Championship adorn the successes of the past.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary, some famous Kremer Porsches were parked in the paddock and also driven during the "Night of Legends" run. The famous Porsche 935 K3 in Jägermeister livery and the no less famous "Vaillant" 935 K2 attracted many admiring glances, and the photographers were also delighted with these historic gems, as you will clearly see in the photo gallery .
This sizzling racing atmosphere was paired with the dramatic light of the sunset... You can't really imagine the Eifel any more beautiful.
CanAm Challenge Cup
Although the field was relatively small, the up to 9-liter displacement monsters were an attraction in their own right this year. With their incomparable, deafening, pounding engine sound, the Lola and McLaren cars did their laps.
The sight of these motorsport extremes always reminds you of the minimalist rules according to which these vehicles were built: two seats and a body covering all four wheels plus two "doors" (simply something hinged on the side, see photos). That was it. The rest was up to you: tire width, vehicle size, materials, engine capacity... No wonder the fastest vehicles would be able to hit the roof of a tunnel at sufficient speed, so much downforce was available.

Storming sixties
The FHR Historic Touring Car and GT Trophy brought a packed field to the start, from Lotus Elan and Jaguar E-Type to Volvo Amazon and Ford GT 40 and, of course, a number of Porsche 911s. But there were also rarities at the start, such as the Jo Siffert/Hans Herrmann Porsche 907, which finished fifth overall in the 24 Hours of Le Mans!
Our photo gallery shows a colorful mix of this exciting field!
