At the beginning of the 1950s, we Frutigerbuben were passionate about collecting pictures of national and international athletes. Hidden in a packet, the pictures and chewing gum were available from the Stucki bakery on Dorfstrasse. The chewing gum was a minor matter. But an album was included and I stuck them in there, neatly, proud to finally have the international sporting greats in my room. There was room for exactly one hundred pictures in the album, which was called "MAPLE LEAF ALBUM-SPORT". Panini pictures in 1952! Of course I had them all, the legendary Swiss cycling aces Ferdi Kübler, Hugo Koblet, world champion Fausto Coppi, Tour de France legend Jean Robic, footballers Seppe Hügi and Fredi Bickel, ski racer Fredy Rubi from Adelboden, my ski idol and slalom artist Georg Schneider, Olympic champion and later car racer Henri Oreiller from France, Grand Prix racer Emanuel de Graffenried, artistic gymnast Josef Stalder. Only one was missing: the Zurich racing driver Willy Peter Daetwyler. I wasn't the only one!
