28 teams registered for the special anniversary challenge of the Swiss Marathon Rally. This is known as a 24-hour non-stop rally, which has been held on the Friday/Saturday after Ascension Day for the past 10 years, i.e. on May 16 and 17, 2015.
Instead of 24 hours, this year's 10th anniversary rally was now run twice over 12 hours. The extra night granted to the participants was compensated for by tougher navigation, because as the name suggests, the SMR is a cross-country rally and not a coffee run!
Rainy start to the rally
Friday brought bad weather. However, the participants will not really have realized this, as they were required to concentrate constantly on the road book and the special tasks.
Driving according to coordinates, elevation curves, Chinese signs or "as close as possible to the Reuss" were new special tasks that had to be mastered. Otherwise, the places indicated in the road book were approached using the 1:200,000 and sometimes also the 1:50,000 map and the prescribed photos were taken along the route. The use of a navigation device was of course forbidden!
Right through the middle of the Lucerne Museum of Transport
A highlight was the drive through the Museum of Transport in Lucerne, where participants were allowed to drive through the middle of the foyer surrounded by hundreds of visitors and then take a photo with their own car under one of the airplanes on display outside. The SMR participants' eyes lit up just as much as those of the public.
The swimming trunks in the luggage
"Why do we have to take our swimming trunks with us?" asked some participants before the start, after they had been informed in advance that their swimming trunks or bikini had to be in their luggage. A simple note in the road book at a photo post saying "jetty with your swimming trunks" solved the mystery. So there was no sea crossing or anything like that to contend with, lucky us!
However, one team dared to enter the water even in the prevailing cold! Many entertaining photos were taken during this drive-through check, with bikinis over their clothes or swimming trunks pulled over their heads - but anyone who even held their swimming trunks in their hands for the required photo had already completed the task.
With the Olditimer on the go-kart track
Then it was on to the Wohlen go-kart track - the second highlight of the day! The discipline here was regularity driving. A practice lap, two valid laps and a run-out lap were allowed.
Up to three vehicles at a time spun in circles on the wet and rubber-slicked track. Apart from a few swerves and spins, the teams mastered this task with flying colors and obviously had fun, as they were of course allowed to take their own vehicle onto the track!
Navigation fun at the end of the first day
At 8 p.m., after a hearty dinner at the karting track, the rally restarted. Anyone who thought they could finally return to the hotel had not reckoned with the cunning organizing committee! There was still a navigationally challenging route to complete, which took another two hours.
Restart at dawn
The restart was at 6.00 a.m. on Saturday morning! The starting line filled up in front of the Hotel Aarau-West in Oberentfelden, where the start and finish were located. The sun was making its presence felt and the temperatures were more pleasant again. This not only pleased the participants, but especially the inspectors at the various checkpoints breathed a sigh of relief, as they had to wait for at least an hour in the wind, rain and cold until all the vehicles had passed.
Saturday was planned to be "tough". There was hardly any time to clear your head and rest a little, full concentration was required. At almost every checkpoint, a new task awaited the participants that had not been announced in the road book. After all, the Swiss Marathon Rally is not an event for "hot showers". The only pampering was provided by the catering team, which supplied the participants with food and drinks. A full stomach is better able to survive such ordeals.
Overjoyed winners
25 classic cars made it back to the finish line on Saturday evening without any notable mishaps. This navigational challenge was won by Martin Rudolf and Stefan Müller in their Reliant Scimitar V8 with just 11,700 penalty points. Comment from the winning team: "The SMR came close to Le Jog, which is known as the toughest rally!"
2nd place went to the team of Sven Fischer/Marc Lüthi in their BMW 323i with 21,000 penalty points. Third place went to the team of Heinz Scholl and Isabelle Kalt Scholl in a Ford Mustang Convertible. They were taking part for the first time and with 28,000 out of a possible total of 108,000 penalty points, they also achieved a remarkable performance!
As every year, the next challenge will be held on the Ascension weekend. The start list will be drawn up in the order in which registrations are received. So if you want to be among the front runners, you should register in good time!
